Purpose
- The Senior Legal Counsel at SBM Offshore is a key advisor to the company’s business and project teams, across a portfolio of complex, high-value projects in the offshore energy sector.
- You are instrumental and proactive in driving legal solutions that enable SBM Offshore’s strategic goals, its stakeholders and management and mitigate compliance and legal risks.
Responsibilities
- You provide high-level, strategic legal advice to SBM on a variety of complex legal topics in support of SBM Offshore's projects in the offshore energy sector.
- You independently lead the drafting, review, and negotiation of high-value commercial contracts and agreements, utilizing both SBM’s templates and industry standard templates.
- You provide strategic legal support and advice, mitigating complex legal risks for the relevant business lines, influencing key decisions, and ensuring alignment with strategic objectives while protecting SBM's interests.
- You manage and prioritize complex legal tasks to meet critical deadlines and stakeholder requirements, ensuring that all tasks are completed efficiently.
- You contribute to the implementation of legal strategies, proposing solutions that address evolving regulatory challenges and ensuring that SBM is positioned to respond effectively.
- You are responsible for the development and maintenance of legal templates and operating procedures, ensuring they reflect industry best practices and align with SBM’s strategic goals.
- You communicate with and manage external counsel and experts, ensuring they deliver high-quality services in line with SBM’s legal services procurement processes, and you provide feedback on legal panel performance.
- You update the LC &C Leadership Team and key business stakeholders on critical legal issues and risks, sharing key lessons learned and areas for continuous improvement in risk management.
- You stay up to date with significant changes to legislation and case law relevant to SBM’s business.
- You contribute to and lead training programs for relevant business lines and within the LC &C team, promoting legal knowledge and compliance across the organization.
- You contribute to the implementation of legal, compliance, and risk management best practices throughout SBM, ensuring the highest standards of legal integrity and operational efficiency.
Education
- LL.B. (Bachelor of Laws) or LL.M. (Master of Laws) degree or equivalent, with coursework in energy law, environmental law, or maritime law preferred.
- Admitted to the bar in a relevant jurisdiction.
- Fluent in English (spoken and written).
Experience
- Minimum 8 to 12 years of legal experience as in-house lawyer or in private practice [preferably with a background in an international law firm], with significant experience in the oil and gas, offshore or energy sectors.
- Experience managing or ability to lead junior lawyers/interns and/or small teams.
- Proven ability to manage complex contractual negotiations and navigate legal as well as regulatory challenges.
- Expertise in managing challenging legal matters across multiple jurisdictions
- Accurate and solution driven legal business partner with sound judgement and understanding of business needs and strategic drivers.
- Proven expertise in international contract law and/or corporate governance, and risk management.
- A clear understanding of the commercial and operational challenges presented by operating in offshore environments.
