Imagine your career taking you to the depths of innovation and the heights of impact.  Our people enable continuous progress. Their commitment, collective expertise, and unique capabilities are the engine room behind SBM Offshore’s True. Blue. Transition. - shaping the future of energy, and beyond.

About Us:
SBM Offshore is the world’s deepwater ocean-infrastructure expert. Our work is already resulting in cleaner, more efficient energy production. True. Blue. Transition. is our promise to enable that into the future while at the same time using our expertise to support new and existing markets in the blue economy. It starts with Advancing our Core: continuing to advance the decarbonization of traditional energy production. While Pioneering More: helping to enable the energy transition and using our unique capabilities in ocean infrastructure to support more industries to grow sustainably.  Sharing our experience for a better blue tomorrow.

Corporate Profile

SBM Offshore designs, builds, installs and operates offshore floating facilities for the offshore energy industry. As a leading technology provider, we put our marine expertise at the service of a responsible energy transition by reducing emissions from fossil fuel production, while developing cleaner solutions for alternative energy sources.

More than 7,400 SBMers worldwide are committed to sharing their experience to deliver safe, sustainable and affordable energy from the oceans for generations to come.

Structural Mooring discipline

The structural mooring discipline is a discipline inside the engineering division of the SBM Monaco regional center. The structural mooring discipline is composed of engineers and designers working together to design the structural solution for ensuring the anchoring of the floating offshore facilities.

Introduction

The solution for anchoring of the offshore floating facilities to the seabed includes several anchor type solutions such as drag anchors, pile anchor, suction anchor gravity anchor and plate anchor.

The suction pile can be used for large deepwater mooring systems and for complex mooring line loadings. They are typically tall steel cylindrical structures with or without internal stiffener systems. The cylinder unit is open at the bottom and normally closed at the top. The mooring line is connected to the anchor pile on the cylinder shell using a lug.

Suction pile is installed by first lowering it into the soil to self-penetration depth. The remainder of the required penetration is achieved by pumping the trapped water from the inside of the suction pile.

Internship scope

The present internship scope is to contribute to developing an automatic finite element model of anchor pile based on key given parameters (such as heigh, diameter, top configuration, stiffening type, etc).

The internship scope will focus on

  1. Understanding the methodology developed in the past project structural analyses done on anchor
  2. Refining the finite element model generation script done in previous projects
  3. developing the automatic load application on finite element model
    1. mooring load application
    2. Geotechnical load application
  4. Perform the finite element analysis necessary for understanding, checking and validating the program steps (i.e. error management).

Deliverables

The following constitute the delivery of the study project scope:

  • Report/presentation details of the development
  • The code source and custom dialog interface

Constraint

The following constraint is to be respected:

  • Finite element model is to be built in shell element in Femap Nastran
  • Finite element model to respect FE standard practice (meshing size, shape, free edge, etc)
  • Code source of the tool to be Python or Femap script languages (VB based language)

Internship requirement

The following requirement is for the internship:

  • Final year engineering school internship (6 months).
  • Structural, mechanical, or mathematical engineering background.
  • Knowledge of Femap or similar finite element software (e.g., Hypermesh, Abaqus, Ansys).
  • Understanding of finite element model theory.
  • Proficiency in programming languages and software development.
