Internship from February 2025 for 6 Months

Introduction

Consideration of hull damage conditions resulting from one or more flooded compartment is required by Class. Sometimes Client may have even more stringent requirements in terms of heel and trim.

Structural Topside and Structural Mooring both address this damaged case in their design process. They do so based on limited and not necessary accurate data; in effect  combining accelerations derived for the intact hull damage in operation (1-year return period) condition with g*sin(a) where g stands for the acceleration due to gravity and, a the combined heel and trim angle.

This approach is elegant from an engineering stand point as it is simple and relies on standard output of Motion and Acceleration analysis reports developed systematically in each project.  However, it is not clear if this approach is conservative, unconservative and, in the latter case, the extent of the conservatism.

Description

There will be four main sub-topics to cover:

  1. With a suitably selected hull, a diffraction model will be constructed incorporating the heel and trim angles derived by Naval discipline. Interface with this discipline will provide mass distribution to implement. First order motion RAO’s will be generated.
  2. Using in-house available CFD software (and guidance – tutoring from suitable expert(s), the efficiency of the bilge keels in damping roll motions will be assessed.
  3. Using information from 1) and 2), motion / acceleration response calculations will be performed with the damaged hull RAO’s and shall be compared to those obtained with current (simplified) methodology.
  4. Should time permit, model test performed in the past will be re-visited with a view to checking ability to reproduce responses measured in the wave basin.

Your Role

Mentoring and progress follow-up to help the trainee perform and achieved the abovementioned goals.

What it will bring to you:

  • Confirmation that current methodology works or not
  • Improved input to Structural Topside/Mooring.

Job requirements

    • Usual engineering schools: ECN, ENSTA Bretagne, Centrale Marseille
    • Less usual ones: ENSTA Paris, ENSHET (Toulouse), Tu Delft,
    • 2nd or 3rd year Engineering school
    • Prior exposure to diffraction analysis is a plus
    • Prior exposure to naval architecture is a plus
    • Programming in Python…
