Purpose

  • SBM Offshore is looking to strengthen its personal income tax team in Porto.  In this function, the Employment Tax Counsel will be part of the Group Tax Department and will report to the Senior position responsible for employment taxes within the Tax Department. 
  • To provide expert guidance to internal stakeholders organizing the international mobility of SBM employees in the home and host locations to oversee and ensure compliance with tax regulations and policies of the Company and employees.  To manage the individual income tax compliance and strategy, ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements, mitigating risks and optimizing financial/tactical outcomes for the organization

Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with all individual tax regulations while optimizing tax efficiencies for the organization. The Employment Tax Counsel is expected to stay updated with changes in tax laws and regulations, interpreting their impact on the business, and advising on necessary adjustments. Coordinate the SBM employees tax compliance process between the appointed SBM tax advisors and SBM stakeholders ensuring adherence to tax laws in multiple jurisdictions. 
  • Working closely with internal stakeholders (mainly the International Mobility, Human Resources, Payroll and Finance teams) to ensure tax policies are applied properly within the Group and the way declarations are prepared are compliant with tax laws. Provide the necessary support to allow them to understand what the rules are and provide tailored tax solutions to guarantee the Company’s tax compliance in these countries. Another crucial aspect of the role is managing relationships with external tax advisors, including the preparation and validation of the authorization list allowing them to assist assignees with their worldwide tax compliance. The Employment Tax Counsel also recommends changes in internal processes and systems to enhance compliance and minimize tax liabilities in maintaining/developing points of control in alignment with the Group Tax Control Framework. Assist with tax planning as needed. Additionally, play a role in training and educating internal stakeholders on tax matters, ensuring awareness and understanding across the organization. Ability to analyze complex tax issues, communicate effectively, and implement practical solutions will be critical to the success in this role.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Law, Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees such as a Master's in Taxation (M.Tax), International Tax Law, or a Juris Doctor (J.D.) with a focus on tax law is preferred. These degrees provide a solid foundation in legal and financial principles necessary for understanding transfer pricing regulations and policies. Certifications such as Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), or specialized certifications in transfer pricing (e.g., Certified Transfer Pricing Professional CTPP) further demonstrate expertise and commitment to the field. Fluency in English is essential for effective communication with internal stakeholders, external auditors, and tax authorities.

Experience

  • Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years of experience with personal income tax matters in an international environment with a strong background in advising multinational corporations on tax compliance. Extensive knowledge of domestic regulations, local tax laws across various jurisdictions are required. Worldwide immigration and payroll knowledge is recommended. Some experience in developing and implementing tax planning strategies to optimize project tax efficiencies and mitigate risks is a plus. Demonstrated ability to lead and oversee tax planning, documentation, and compliance projects. Experience in managing tax audits, disputes, and negotiations with tax authorities. Strong analytical and quantitative skills to analyze tax and financial implications in a complex environment. Ability to assess and mitigate tax risks.
