Additional Location:
Description:

Imagine your career taking you to the depths of innovation and the heights of impact.  Our people enable continuous progress. Their commitment, collective expertise, and unique capabilities are the engine room behind SBM Offshore’s True. Blue. Transition. - shaping the future of energy, and beyond.

About Us:
SBM Offshore is the world’s deepwater ocean-infrastructure expert. Our work is already resulting in cleaner, more efficient energy production. True. Blue. Transition. is our promise to enable that into the future while at the same time using our expertise to support new and existing markets in the blue economy. It starts with Advancing our Core: continuing to advance the decarbonization of traditional energy production. While Pioneering More: helping to enable the energy transition and using our unique capabilities in ocean infrastructure to support more industries to grow sustainably.  Sharing our experience for a better blue tomorrow.

Purpose

Introduction:

Floating offshore units are generally fitted with hull appendages.

Some of them can be very large and submerged so that their presence cannot be neglected when deriving hydrodynamics database with potential theory software like Hydrostar. Those database are a pre-requisite to derive design motions and accelerations on projects and also to perform mooring analyses.

Lower Riser Balcony (LRB) is a large hull appendage likely to impact roll motion so that it has to be properly taken into account. Fact that it may have sharp edges, panels facing each other and can be very close to waterline makes it sensitive to model as it infringes some limitations of linear potential theory.

Focus will be on 2nd order roll but impact on added mass, 1st order motions/loads and 2nd order loads on other degrees of freedom than roll will also have to be investigated.

Purpose of the internship is to define best modelling techniques taking into considerations:

  • Current state of the art
  • New software capabilities
  • Model test findings
  • Practicality to deploy method on projects and impact on design values.

Responsibilities

There will be three main steps to cover:

  1. Get understanding of the scope and prepare a bibliography
    1. SBM engineering practices
    2. Literature on the topic.
    3. New capabilities of hydrostar software and discussions with experts / software developers.

  1. Define best modelling techniques ensuring
    1. High fidelity numerical model vs basin tests
    2. Converged (added mass 1st and) 2nd order wave loads (based on geometry details, mesh, LRB modelling, lid, damping for 1st order motions, delta_w …). Both with a view to perform mooring analyses (surge/sway /yaw) and motion/acceleration analyses.

  1. Apply the method on a past project to assess impact overall
    1. On motion analyses (design accelerations)
    2. Mooring analyses (as appropriate)

Your Role

    • Get a good understanding of the methods used .
    • Perform numerical analyses to find best modelling techniques. Interpret results.
    • Present conclusions to Hydrodynamics department.

What it will bring to you:

    • Exposure to engineering methods used in design
    • Use of industry-recognized software (Hydrostar)
    • Global picture including how to analyze model test results, how to calibrate numerical model vs model tests, how to perform radiation-diffraction analyses, how outcome is used for motion analyses and mooring analyses.
    • Exchanges within hydrodynamics department and collaboration with software supplier
    • Solid theoretical and practical background on hydrodynamics whichever field of applications (shipbuilding, offshore, renewables).

Education

    • Engineering schools , 2nd or 3rd year
    • Prior exposure to diffraction analysis is a plus
    • Programming in Python is a nice to have
