Description:

Imagine your career taking you to the depths of innovation and the heights of impact.  Our people enable continuous progress. Their commitment, collective expertise, and unique capabilities are the engine room behind SBM Offshore’s True. Blue. Transition. - shaping the future of energy, and beyond.

About Us:
SBM Offshore is the world’s deepwater ocean-infrastructure expert. Our work is already resulting in cleaner, more efficient energy production. True. Blue. Transition. is our promise to enable that into the future while at the same time using our expertise to support new and existing markets in the blue economy. It starts with Advancing our Core: continuing to advance the decarbonization of traditional energy production. While Pioneering More: helping to enable the energy transition and using our unique capabilities in ocean infrastructure to support more industries to grow sustainably.  Sharing our experience for a better blue tomorrow.

Purpose

  • Introduction:

    As part of core business of SBM Offshore as ocean solution provider (i.e. Floating Windfarm, FPSO…), installation at sea of its own product is a key component. During critical offshore operations, maintaining the precise positioning of installation vessels is essential and this task is devolved to the Dynamic Positioning (DP) system onboard.

    At the project planning stage, a DP capability envelope is defined based on vessel thrust capacity, environmental conditions, and external forces using static calculations. This envelope, combined with historical metocean data, helps estimate the most probable weather-related waiting times. The accuracy of this envelope relies heavily on assessing the effective thrust available from each thruster, accounting for various losses—particularly those caused by thruster-to-thruster interactions. These losses must then be assessed accurately.

    Based on recent offshore operations, some unexpected behaviours remain unexplained which required to customize our analyses to be prepared for next operations.

Responsibilities

  • Your Role

    There is no cursus that prepares to jump into offshore installation world. Although you will first start working in group and out of your comfort zone on true study case during which you will explore various tools, meet engineering & operational teams of the department as well as presenting your work on each sprint (every 3 days).

    Starting from there your internship will be split into four main components;

    CFD-Based Thruster Interaction Analysis : Use Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to evaluate and quantify thrust losses due to interactions between the hull and the multiple thrusters.

    Static Analysis Refinement: Update the static DP analysis tool to use the updated losses.

    Dynamic Simulation Tool Development: Create a dynamic simulation model that replicates the behavior of the dynamic positioning (DP) system used on SBM installation vessel. This model will be integrated into industry well known analysis software (Orcaflex).

    Validation: Projects being executed offshore in parallel, you will validate the development against offshore records and test real situations.

    What it will bring to you:

      • Introduction to offshore environment & operations;
      • You will have opportunity to work with experienced people from various engineering disciplines;
      • Offer hands-on experience with real-world offshore challenges;
      • Substantial gain in experience in offshore engineering, numerical modelling, and fluid dynamics.

Education

    • 3rd year of engineering school with hydrodynamic or related background;
    • Skilled in programming algorithm, numerical analysis and good mathematics skills;
    • A previous experience with Orcaflex and/or some CFD software is a plus;
    • Good written and oral communication skills (English);
  •
