Intern - Hydrodynamics Engineer
Monaco, MC
Imagine your career taking you to the depths of innovation and the heights of impact.  Our people enable continuous progress. Their commitment, collective expertise, and unique capabilities are the engine room behind SBM Offshore’s True. Blue. Transition. - shaping the future of energy, and beyond.
About Us:
SBM Offshore is the world’s deepwater ocean-infrastructure expert. Our work is already resulting in cleaner, more efficient energy production. True. Blue. Transition. is our promise to enable that into the future while at the same time using our expertise to support new and existing markets in the blue economy. It starts with Advancing our Core: continuing to advance the decarbonization of traditional energy production. While Pioneering More: helping to enable the energy transition and using our unique capabilities in ocean infrastructure to support more industries to grow sustainably.  Sharing our experience for a better blue tomorrow.
Purpose
Title: Mooring agent (IA development) – application to a turret moored FPSO
Duration : 6 Months internship - Monaco based
Main types of mooring systems are Single Point Mooring (vessel weatherwanes about a fixed part like a turret) or spread mooring (fixed vessel heading, unit is generally moored by 4 bundles of mooring lines, one per corner). See figures below.
Mooring line tensions are generally monitored through Anchor Line Load Monitoring System (ALLMS) to be able to detect line failures. Offshore industry feedback is that these ALLMS are not reliable when operating submerged or in the splash zone.
In such conditions, to guarantee integrity of mooring systems within the fleet, SBM has developed a mooring agent using Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to extract an intact or damage diagnosis.
This is described in following conference paper : OMAE2022-79591 Mooring line failure detection in the absence of load monitoring. Authors : M. Naciri, M. Viola (SBM) ; Z. Wang, R. Yam (ABS).
Purpose of the internship is to develop similar mooring agent for a turret moored unit.
Responsibilities
There will be three main steps to cover:
1. Getting familiar with :
-
- Mooring analyses (modelling and environmental data)
- State of the art on IA applied to mooring agents (SBM + industry-wide )

2. Define an AI approach and develop training set accordingly (mooring numerical simulations) then check performance on another set of simulations
3. Check performance of the AI model based on real signals as per offshore records (requires signal pre-processing)
Items 2) and 3) will require iterations.
Your Role
-
- Get a good understanding of the problematics.
- Perform numerical analyses to find best modelling / IA techniques. Interpret results.
- Present conclusions to various stakeholders in Hydrodynamics, Digital and Operations department.

What it will bring to you:
-
- Exposure to engineering methods used in mooring design and use of industry-recognized software (Ariane, Orcaflex)
- Exposure to digital developments applied on an industrial problem with direct application on a unit in production
- Work in multidiscipline environment (intern will be supported by both mooring experts and digital experts).
- Work in multicultural environment

Education
- Engineering schools , 2nd or 3rd year
- Ability to develop AI model (theoretical background and practical experience)
- Programming in Python (script to handle large data, timeseries, cluster data) is required
- Prior exposure to offshore industry, mooring is a plus but not a requisite
- Fluent in English : all written documentation is available in English, deliverables / presentations are to be delivered in English. Very good command to allow technical exchanges and interfaces.
