Purpose

Topic: Performance Assessment and Optimization of Girder-to-Plate Structural Connections

As part of this internship, you will assess and compare the structural performance of typical girder-to-plate connection details used in floating offshore units and other welded steel structures.

6 months internship, based in Monaco

Responsibilities

  • Assess how geometry, welding configuration, alignment, and local reinforcement influence load transfer, stress concentration, fatigue resistance, and tolerance to fabrication defects.
  • Compare different connection arrangements and evaluate their performance under static and cyclic loading conditions.
  • Investigate the influence of initial weld defects and cracks on structural behavior.
  • Evaluate connection details considering static strength, fatigue life, crack initiation, crack propagation, and resistance to unstable fracture.
  • Assess and compare the structural performance of typical girder-to-plate connection details using static, fatigue, and fracture mechanics criteria.
  • Develop and use advanced finite element models to support the analyses.

Education

  • Currently enrolled in a Master's degree program in Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Interest in structural mechanics, welded steel structures, and offshore engineering.
  • Basic knowledge of finite element modelling.
  • Familiarity with Advanced Finite Element Modelling, Codes & Standards, and FEMAP/Nastran is a plus.
