Description:

Purpose

Title: Mechanical products advanced design & analysis

Duration : 6 Months internship - Monaco based

Description: SBM Offshore, a recognized leader in Oil & Gas weathervaning units, serves as a benchmark for innovation and performance in this domain. Around this feature, several mechanical components are used: swivel stack, bogie wheel system, main roller bearing and mooring connectors. The training will be composed of the following activities within the Engineering Mechanical Design Department in Monaco, with possibility to visit the Technology & Development Center located around Nice.

Responsibilities

  • Overview of Mechanical Systems: Introduction to those critical mechanical components, with a focus on their roles in offshore applications.
  • Design Improvement Methodologies: Exploration of structured approaches for upgrading and optimizing existing mechanical systems, including design-to-cost and design-for-maintenance strategies. This includes preliminary analysis using hand calculations allowing a screening of various solutions via a trial-and-error approach, as well as a collaboration with our Manufacturing Team.
  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA): Use of tools to assess strength, fatigue, and deformation under operational loads, with case studies from real-world scenarios.
  • Kinematic and Dynamic Simulation: Hands-on training with Recurdyn or equivalent software to simulate motion, loads, and interactions in complex mechanical assemblies.
  • Cross-Disciplinary Design Thinking: Encouraging “out-of-the-box” solutions by drawing from automotive, aerospace, and civil engineering practices to solve offshore mechanical challenges

Education

Main engineering tools used: CATIA for 3D modeling and 2D drawings, ABAQUS for FEA, Excel for hand calculations, Word for reporting. Recurdyn or equivalent for dynamics simulation.
