Internship - Installation Engineer
Monaco, MC
Purpose
Topic : Operational Data Analytics and Digital Twin Development for Offshore Installation Vessels
6 months internship Monaco based
Introduction
As a leading provider of offshore energy solutions, SBM Offshore continuously develops innovative methods to optimize the installation of its offshore assets, including FPSOs and Floating Wind developments. Accurate simulation of offshore operations is essential to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective project execution.
To support future projects and upcoming installation assets, the Installation Engineering department is investing in the development of advanced simulation capabilities. These tools will enable engineers to better predict operational performance, evaluate installation strategies, and improve engineering efficiency throughout project execution
Responsibilities
Your Mission
Modern offshore installation vessels are equipped with a large number of sensors continuously collecting operational data through the vessel's Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system. These measurements provide valuable insight into vessel behavior, equipment performance, and environmental conditions during offshore operations.
Today, a significant amount of this data remains underexploited. Leveraging these datasets represents a unique opportunity to improve engineering analyses, validate simulation models, and develop new capabilities for performance monitoring and digital-twin applications.
As part of this internship, you will contribute to the development of innovative methods and tools for transforming operational vessel data into engineering insights.
Working closely with installation engineers, hydrodynamic specialists, and offshore field engineers, you will:
-
- Explore and analyze historical sensor data collected from SBM Offshore installation vessels;
- Identify key performance indicators and operational parameters relevant to offshore installation activities;
- Investigate relationships between vessel behavior, equipment response, and environmental conditions such as wind, waves, and currents;
- Develop methodologies to correlate measured offshore data with metocean information and project conditions;
- Compare real operational data against engineering simulations performed using OrcaFlex;
- Assess the accuracy of existing engineering models and identify opportunities for improvement;
- Develop algorithms, dashboards, or engineering tools to facilitate data interpretation and performance assessment.
A key aspect of the internship will be to evaluate how operational data can be leveraged to support the development of a digital twin of SBM Offshore installation activities. This includes identifying the most valuable signals, defining suitable analysis methodologies, and proposing practical applications for project execution and engineering studies.
The work will involve frequent interactions with operational and engineering teams to ensure that the developed solutions address real project needs and can be effectively integrated into future engineering workflows.
What You Will Gain:
This internship offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of offshore engineering, simulation, and data science.
You will:
-
- Gain exposure to real offshore operational data from large-scale installation projects;
- Learn how engineering simulations are validated against field measurements;
- Develop expertise in offshore hydrodynamics and marine operations;
- Acquire practical experience with OrcaFlex and engineering analysis tools;
- Strengthen your skills in data analytics, modelling, and digitalization;
- Contribute to the development of future digital-twin and performance-monitoring solutions within the offshore energy industry;
- Collaborate with experienced installation, hydrodynamic, and offshore operations specialists.
