EX INSPECTOR 
 

Reports To: Offshore Core Crew:
Electrical Supervisor (Line Manager)  

 

Onshore Base Support:
Ex Integrity Expert (Functional Manager)  

 

Background: The Ex Inspector will exhibit exemplary safety and engineering skills in all matters pertaining to electrical/ instrumentation inspection and repair works on and the vessel upon which they are working.
They are the person with overall responsibility of inspections and repairs of Ex equipment. This includes coordination and management on behalf of their Line Manager any Ex related activities, including third-party Ex-inspection teams on board the vessel.

Additionally, the Ex Inspector will be responsible for Ex guidance, coaching and mentoring of the core-crew,including the use of the Ex Electronic Management System.

 

Authority: Deemed the Unit “Ex Responsible Person”. Responsible for the management of the on-board Ex Electronic Management System, which shall include but not limited to data entry, data output, reporting and trending.
Responsible for management of the Ex Equipment Register and the Certificate Database.

 

Competencies
In general the Ex Inspector will be responsible for creating work orders in the CMMS for Ex preventative maintenance and repair work, including follow-up and close out, and ensuring allotted work is carried out safely, efficiently and according to procedure and that his/her supervisor is made aware of all activities, especially where safety is an issue.
The Ex Inspector is required to adhere strictly to all HSSE Processes and Procedures. The Ex Inspector will exhibit exemplary safety and engineering skills in all matters pertaining to electrical/ instrumentation inspection and repair works on and pertinent to the vessel upon which they are working.

They are the person in charge of inspections and repairs of Ex equipment. This includes coordination and management of any third-party ex-inspection teams on board the vessel. Additionally, the Ex Inspector will be responsible for Ex guidance and coaching of the core-crew where applicable, including the use of the Ex MMS Tool.
The Ex Inspector shall have access to all Electrical Rooms, using approved routes, as identified and limited by the REP/UEA. (Limited only to activities related to Ex integrity maintenance, inspections and repairs according to his/her competency and Ex certification).
Overall responsibility for the Unit Ex visual, close and detailed inspections, plus maintenance and repairs (as directed by their supervisor and within the limits of their competency and Ex certification). Liaise directly with the Electrical Supervisor and Instrument Supervisor to carry out Ex activities (repairs and inspections) on electrical and instrumentation equipment based upon KPI’s, work-packs and technical instructions received and directed by Onshore Support as appropriate.
The Ex Inspector will make all reporting using the Ex Maintenance Management System (Ex MMS) and CMMS, as necessary.
Responsible for the Ex Maintenance Management System (Ex MMS) and the Ex Certificate Register.
The Ex Inspector is responsible for accurate timely reporting and taking appropriate actions in line with targeted Ex KPI’s.
Make recommendations and improvements in working practices for greater safety, efficiency and reliability including
• Refer technical queries (as required) promptly to the Ex Onshore support.
• Establish effective professional relationships with all personnel.
• Ensure efficiency and productivity in all works undertaken.

Monitor and maintain pollution control measures.
• Provide additional duties as required by the OIM and/or HOD to maintain the safe and efficient running of the Unit. 

 

Training and Competence:

• Current IECEx (Units of Competence: Ex 001, Ex 003, Ex 004, Ex 007 and Ex 008),or
• Current CompEx (EX01, EX02, EX03 and EX04) required • BST / HUET / THUET (mandatory before going offshore) • Offshore medical certificate (mandatory before going offshore)
 

Qualifications and Experience:
• Qualified to NVQ Level 3 (or recognized equivalent) in Electrical and/or Instrumentation Maintenance Engineering • Experience (5 x years minimum recommended) in electrical inspection and repair, with Oil & Gas
(offshore or petrochemical or refinery) preferred
• Good understanding of Permit-To-Work systems, Electrical Standards (for example, IEC 60079,
NEC500/505, API RP14FZ) and the Risk Assessment process

Personal: High level of awareness of safety issues. Conscientious, committed, flexible, versatile and determined. Good interpersonal skills, able to work both within a team, and when required, with autonomy. Good levels of communication in written and spoken English. Positive and
assertive.
Leadership: Ability to effectively interface with multi-national inspectors and multi-national crew and office
staff. Ability to lead and coordinate teams.
Technical: Good standard of analytical, diagnostic, technical and professional knowledge on electrical/
instrument systems, components and procedures.
IT: Good IT skills required using MS Office packages. Ability to quickly learn and use new
software packages.
